BID Façade Improvement Grant Program
In 2011, the Façade Improvement Grant Program continued its third year of operation, offering up to $10,000 in matching grants for façade improvements. The overall grant budget for 2011 was $40,000. The Village of Hartland committed $20,000 towards the Facade Improvement Grant Program. There was a significant reduction in the applications in 2011 compared to previous years.
The BID Façade Improvement Grant Program projects approved in 2011 program are:
1. Citgo-Hartland Village Mart, 301 E Capitol Drive - paving improvements.
2. Dr. Jim Muenzenberger, DDS, 139 E Capitol Drive - paving improvements.
3. EmanDemco LLC, 142 E Capitol Drive - complete exterior make over.
Sign and Awning Grant Program
In 2011, the BID approved matching grants up to $750 for new signs and awnings installed in the district. The purpose of the program is to encourage the installation new sign and awnings featuring printed signage advertising the business name, address and/or logo.
New signs or awning installed and completed in 2011:
1. Dr Jim Muenzenberger, 139 E Capitol Dr - new awnings installed.
2. Natural Health Solutions, 103 North Avenue – new sign, but installation not complete until 2012.
Grant Program Promotion - Property owners and businesses were contacted to increase awareness about the BID grant programs.
Streetscape Program
Decorative Pole Baskets - Summer and winter seasonal arrangements filled 13 decorative pole baskets. New in 2011, was the installation of artificial floral arrangements during the summer months.
BID Marketing Committee 2011 Accomplishments
The Marketing Committee was involved in creating opportunities for BID members to participate in downtown events and to provide opportunities for businesses to showcase their products and services. The events in which the BID participated and/or sponsored in 2011 are:
1. Out-N-About - The downtown Out-N-About event was held in May 2011. The BID participated in planning the event and made a monetary contribution towards marketing and promotion.
2. 4th Annual Restaurant Crawl - The Restaurant Crawl was held in September 2011. The BID event to promotes the many Village restaurants and creates an awareness of the many types of eating establishments in Hartland. The Restaurant Crawl provides an opportunity for patrons to purchase a ticket to receive a food sample at each of the participating restaurant locations. The BID hosted the event, sponsored the trolley service, and coordinated the ticket sales and restaurant participation. Approximately 200 participants enjoyed food and spirits featuring cuisine from 11 Hartland restaurants and eateries.
3. Hartland Lights - The Hartland Lights event was held in December 2011. The BID participated in planning the event and made a monetary contribution towards marketing and promotion, as well as the trolley service. A holiday tree lighting ceremony, Festival of Trees, the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train and other special events were held in conjunction with Hartland Lights to promote downtown Hartland.
4. Girlfriend’s Gala - New in 2011, Girlfriend’s Gala was a business sponsored event held in August 2011. The BID made a monetary contribution to partially sponsor the event.
5. Community Hometown Celebration Parade - The BID made a monetary contribution to support the Parade in 2011.
6. BID Event Sponsorship - The committee will initiate an application process for local business events when funding is requested from the BID.
Other Marketing Committee initiatives in 2011:
1. New BID Website - The new BID website was launched in July 2011. Ocreative Design was hired to design and develop the website. Website traffic has increased substantially since the launch of the new site.
2. Business Directory - The BID directory listing business contact information was updated and distributed to BID businesses. Websites were added to this edition.
3. Master BID List - The master BID spreadsheet list of all business and property owners in the district was updated. Members were contacted for updated business information to use on the BID website business directory.
4. Communication Tools - A new group email newsletter account was established in Mail Chimp to communicate with BID members and other interested email subscribers.
5. Website Training Seminars - Two training sessions were conducted in September 2011 for members that offered information on how to effectively use the BID website to promote individual businesses. Downtown businesses are encouraged to submit information to the BID to have it included on the BID website.
6. Logo Change - The BID board voted to use downtown Hartland instead of Village Center to identity the district going forward. The BID logo and all signage and identification were switched over to the new logo.
7. Welcome New Businesses - Ten new businesses opened in the BID district during 2011:

9. Systems & Hardware, Inc., 145 North Avenue

2010 Annual Recognition Awards
Each year in December the BID Board of Director’s votes to select individuals and businesses deserving recognition for the contributions they make to improve the overall success of the Village Center. The 2010 awardees received their recognition at the Annual Meeting and Award Ceremony in January 2011. These projects were selected:

BID Economic Development Committee 2011 Accomplishments
2. Available Property Listing - The available property listing was updated and posted on the BID and Village of Hartland websites.
3. Targeted Business Recruitment Program - Targeted businesses were identified and recruited to Hartland. Individual businesses were contacted via phone and/or mail as part of the recruitment program. The intent of the program is to invite businesses to locate in downtown Hartland.
4. Business Retention Program - Committee members conducted one-on-one meetings with downtown BID businesses to assist them with any expansion and business needs.
5. Reduction in Vacancy Rate - The vacancy rate declined to 7.7% of the total square footage available in the downtown district.
BID Executive Committee 2011 Accomplishments
1. The BID has successfully completed 5 years of operation.
2. The 2012 annual budget was created and approved.
3. BID Board of Directors and Officers were elected for expiring terms.
4. The BID office was moved to a new cost saving location, 155 E Capitol Drive, Suite 10A.
